The filter’s job is to stop harmful pollutants from the exhaust gases from escaping into the atmosphere and harming the environment. Eventually, there will be too much soot built up in the filter, and it will have to be cleaned. The filter is cleaned by being emptied out or, more commonly, by burning off all of the soot.
